Bradwell Nuclear Power Station
Forest Environmental Ltd is presently working on
a multi-million pound contract to remove the asbestos
from Bradwell Nuclear Power Station during the decommissioning
process. There are two nuclear reactors, as can be
seen from the photo.
It is one of the original ‘Magnox’ nuclear
power stations that were the earliest commercial
generators of electricity. Bradwell was the second
nuclear station in the world producing power (Berkeley
in Gloucestershire beat it by 4 weeks)
The risks that require alleviation are the asbestos
thermal insulation itself, the attendant radiological
contamination (which varies with the distance from
the reactor), the scale of the project (each boiler
is 150 ft high), exposure to the elements, and working
in confined space.
The contract has been running for approximately 6
months. Monitoring of the workforce is on a continuous
basis and, so far, the estimates for their exposure
to contamination have been bettered.
