Mogden Sewage Treatment Works, Twickenham, Middlesex

Problem

A mosquito-infested and sludge-flooded digester chamber had been leaking through sludge valves onto pipe work that was insulated with asbestos materials.

Solution

We killed the mosquitoes using a pesticide that’s harmless to the wildlife that frequent the chambers at night.

We then repaired the valves using a new technique involving the injection of acrylic grout into the stuffing boxes of the valves.

Following this, we pumped out the 0.5m deep sludge covering the floor of the chamber directly into a sludge disposal lorry.

The asbestos pipe work was stripped and the entire chamber was thoroughly decontaminated.

Result

The contract was a complete success and we have subsequently been awarded many additional contracts as a result. Two years after we’d completed the job, we received a phone call from the client who was pleased to report that the valves were still sealed and no further repairs were needed.
